Vet-Formulated High Protein Joint Support Dog Food with Natural Glucosamine, Chondroitin, and Omega-3 Fatty Acids

VFS Active Joints is a vet-formulated, high-protein dog food developed to support joint health in dogs of all ages, with a particular focus on the nutritional needs of active dogs and seniors whose veterinarians have recommended joint-supportive nutrition.

The formula draws glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate from three natural food sources confirmed in the ingredient list: cage-free turkey necks, New Zealand green lipped mussel, and egg shell membrane collagen. Together these deliver a guaranteed Glucosamine minimum of 750 mg/kg and Chondroitin Sulfate minimum of 1,000 mg/kg, both confirmed in the Guaranteed Analysis. Most foods that mention glucosamine do not publish guaranteed mg/kg values. VFS Active Joints does.

Omega-3 fatty acids EPA and DHA come from two marine sources: sustainable Krill Meal and Herring Oil. Both are listed with source declarations in the ingredient list. The Guaranteed Analysis confirms EPA & DHA combined minimum of 0.65%, which are among the highest EPA/DHA levels available in any over-the-counter dog food. These fatty acids support a healthy inflammatory response and contribute to joint comfort, coat quality, and overall cellular health.

Antioxidant support comes from Astaxanthin, Turmeric, Vitamin C (350 mg/kg min), and Vitamin E (500 IU/kg min), all confirmed from the Guaranteed Analysis. L-Carnitine is included to support fat metabolism and lean muscle maintenance. The formula is chicken-free and formulated with reduced sodium. Available without a prescription. If you have questions or concerns, consult your veterinarian to determine the best dietary approach for your dog.

The Science Behind VFS Active Joints

Every ingredient in VFS Active Joints was selected for a specific, evidence-based purpose. Here is the science behind the key components: Available Without a Prescription

  • Green Lipped Mussel (Perna canaliculus): One of the most studied natural joint-support ingredients in veterinary nutrition. Research has shown that green lipped mussel extract contains glycosaminoglycans (including glucosamine and chondroitin), omega-3 fatty acids, and other compounds that support cartilage integrity and a healthy inflammatory response in joints. (Hielm-Bjorkman et al., Veterinary Record, 2009)
  • Egg Shell Membrane Collagen: A natural source of collagen, glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, and hyaluronic acid. A peer-reviewed study in dogs found that supplementation with egg shell membrane supported joint health and mobility over a 6-week period. (Ruff et al., Journal of Veterinary Medicine, 2016)
  • Krill-derived EPA and DHA: Research on omega-3 fatty acids in dogs with joint conditions has consistently demonstrated support for joint comfort and mobility. EPA and DHA help modulate the body's inflammatory response, which is relevant to long-term joint health. The Guaranteed Analysis confirms EPA and DHA min of 0.65% in VFS Active Joints.
  • Astaxanthin: A carotenoid antioxidant found in krill and marine organisms. Astaxanthin is one of the most potent natural antioxidants studied in companion animal nutrition, with research supporting its role in reducing oxidative stress markers.

VFS Active Joints is available over the counter and is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure or prevent any disease.  If you have questions or concerns, consult your veterinarian before making dietary changes, particularly for dogs with diagnosed joint conditions.

VFS Active Joints is a veterinarian-formulated dry dog food primarily designed for joint support, but it can also be considered for use as a "heart healthy" formula due to the elevated levels of omega-3 fatty acids and reduced sodium levels.

This makes it suitable as a daily diet for active or senior dogs that may benefit from joint care without compromising cardiovascular considerations.

Key Heart-Healthy Aspects

Enhanced Omega-3 Fatty Acids (DHA & EPA)

The formula includes elevated levels of anti-inflammatory omega-3s from sustainable sources like krill meal and herring oil. These provide bioavailable DHA and EPA.

Benefits for heart health in dogs

  • Omega-3s have anti-inflammatory properties that can help reduce inflammation associated with heart conditions.
  • They may support better heart muscle function, and could potentially act as a mild anticoagulant to help prevent blood clots.
  • They can improve overall energy metabolism in heart cells.
  • These fatty acids also support joint health, skin/coat, and general wellness, making the formula multi-benefit for your fur baby.

This aligns with veterinary recommendations for supplementing omega-3s in dogs with heart disease or at risk.

Reduced Sodium Formula

Active joints Formula is a reduced sodium formula with a sodium content around 0.24% as fed (roughly 0.26% on a dry matter basis), which is much lower than many standard dog foods.

Why low sodium matters for heart health:

  • High sodium intake causes the body to retain water, which increases blood volume and puts extra strain on the heart. This can worsen congestive heart failure by contributing to fluid buildup in the lungs or abdomen.
  • Veterinary cardiologists often recommend sodium restriction for dogs with heart disease. While not an ultra low sodium prescription diet, this formula offers a moderate reduction which may be suitable for maintenance or preventive heart support..

Additional Supporting Features

  • High-quality protein (min 30%) from turkey and other animal sources helps maintain lean muscle mass, which is beneficial for overall heart health and mobility.
  • Added L-Carnitine supports fat metabolism and energy production in the heart muscle.
  • Antioxidants (e.g., astaxanthin from krill, turmeric, vitamins C & E) help combat oxidative stress, which plays a role in cardiovascular aging and disease.
  • Made without chicken, which may appeal to dogs with sensitivities.

Summary: Why It's Considered Heart Healthy

VFS Active Joints combines joint-focused ingredients (glucosamine, chondroitin from natural sources like turkey necks, green-lipped mussel, and eggshell membrane) that double as cardio-supportive elements: boosted anti-inflammatory omegas for inflammation control, and muscle support combined with lower sodium to potentially ease cardiac workload.

It is not a therapeutic prescription diet for advanced heart failure (those often require even stricter sodium/phosphorus/protein control under vet supervision). Instead, it's a complete, balanced everyday food for dogs needing joint support while providing potential heart-friendly nutrition.

If your dog has diagnosed heart issues, we recommend always consulting your veterinarian before switching foods, as they will be able to confirm if the sodium/ omega levels in VFS Active Joints fit’s your dog's specific needs.

FAQ’s

Does this dog food contain glucosamine and chondroitin?

Yes. VFS Active Joints is formulated with three natural food sources of glucosamine and chondroitin sulfate, all confirmed in the ingredient list: cage-free turkey necks, New Zealand green lipped mussel, and egg shell membrane collagen. The Guaranteed Analysis confirms a Glucosamine minimum of 750 mg/kg and Chondroitin Sulfate minimum of 1,000 mg/kg. Most dog foods that mention glucosamine or chondroitin do not publish guaranteed minimum levels. VFS Active Joints does.

What omega-3 sources are in this food?

VFS Active Joints sources omega-3 fatty acids from two marine ingredients. Krill Meal is the primary source, listed in the ingredient list as "Source of DHA-Docosahexaenoic Acid and EPA-Eicosapentaenoic Acid." Herring Oil is the secondary source, also with a parenthetical DHA/EPA source declaration. The Guaranteed Analysis confirms EPA and DHA min of 0.65% in VFS Active Joints.

Is this a good food for dogs with joint problems?

VFS Active Joints was developed to support joint health through a combination of natural glucosamine and chondroitin sources, high-level EPA and DHA omega-3 fatty acids, and antioxidants including Astaxanthin, Turmeric, Vitamin C, and Vitamin E. For dogs with diagnosed joint conditions such as osteoarthritis, it can serve as a supportive daily diet. This formula is designed as a complete and balanced food, making it suitable as a primary diet for joint support rather than just a supplement. Many owners report improved mobility and comfort in their dogs when using this food consistently. If you have any questions or concerns consult your veterinarian before making any diet changes, as joint disease often benefits from a combination of nutrition, exercise management, and veterinary care. Always pair dietary changes with appropriate weight control and vet-recommended treatments for best results.

Is this food suitable for senior dogs?

VFS Active Joints is well-suited for the nutritional needs of senior dogs. The formula combines the high-protein profile (30% min crude protein) needed to combat age-related muscle loss with the joint-supportive nutrients commonly recommended for older dogs: glucosamine, chondroitin, EPA, DHA, and antioxidants. The reduced sodium formulation is an additional consideration for senior dogs. If your senior dog has specific health concerns, consult your veterinarian for personalized dietary guidance.

Does this food contain chicken?

No. VFS Active Joints is a chicken-free formula. The primary protein sources are turkey and turkey meal. The ingredient list contains no chicken, chicken meal, or chicken fat, making it a suitable option for dogs with chicken sensitivities who also need joint nutritional support.

What is the protein content of this food?

VFS Active Joints has a Crude Protein minimum of 30.00% and Crude Fat minimum of 14.00% (as-fed basis, from the Guaranteed Analysis). Calorie content is not currently confirmed - refer to the feeding chart on the bag for daily portion guidance or use the SquarePet Food Calculator.
