The Science Behind Low-Fat Nutrition for Dogs

The nutritional science behind reduced-fat diets for dogs is well-established in veterinary literature. Key findings that inform the VFS Low Fat Formula approach:

  • A 2024 review in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association found that low-fat gastrointestinal diets are among the most frequently recommended dietary strategies for dogs requiring digestive support, with fat identified as a key nutrient of interest in managing fat sensitivity and digestive workload. (Cridge et al., JAVMA, 2024)
  • Research from the University of Tennessee College of Veterinary Medicine (PLOS ONE, 2023) examined how dietary fat levels affect markers of exocrine pancreatic enzyme release in dogs - the physiological basis for fat restriction in sensitive dogs.
(Kirk et al., PLOS ONE, 2023)
  • Veterinary specialists recommend fat content below 8% for dogs with severe fat sensitivity. VFS Low Fat Formula’s guaranteed fat maximum of 8% aligns directly with this threshold. (SASH Veterinary Specialists)

This food is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. Always consult your veterinarian before changing your dog’s diet.

Complete the Low-Fat Routine

Dogs on reduced-fat diets can still enjoy treats - if they’re the right ones. VFS® Low Fat Soft-Baked Treats are made with the same Ocean Whitefish formula, with a guaranteed fat maximum of 8%. Vet-formulated, soft-baked, and loved by picky eaters.

FAQ’s

What kind of dog needs a low fat diet?

Veterinarians typically recommend low-fat diets for dogs with certain digestive sensitivities, fat intolerance, or conditions related to fat metabolism, as well as dogs managing their weight. If your veterinarian has recommended a reduced-fat diet for your dog, the specific fat percentage target will depend on your dog’s individual health status. VFS Low Fat Formula guarantees a fat maximum of 8% (dry matter basis), making it one of the most restricted fat levels available without a prescription. Always follow your veterinarian’s guidance on dietary fat targets.

What is the fat percentage in SquarePet VFS Low Fat Formula?

The guaranteed analysis shows a minimum of 6% and a maximum of 8% crude fat on an as-fed basis. On a dry matter basis (which removes moisture for accurate cross-product comparison), fat content is approximately 6.7–8.9% - among the lowest available in an over-the-counter dog food. For context, Hill’s i/d Low Fat contains approximately 7.4% fat (dry matter) and Royal Canin Gastrointestinal Low Fat approximately 7.0% (dry matter) - both require a prescription.

Do I need a prescription for SquarePet VFS Low Fat Formula?

No. VFS Low Fat Formula is available directly from SquarePet and at independent pet retailers across the U.S. - no veterinary prescription is required. Majority of the competitors require a prescription. If you have any questions or concerns consult your veterinarian before switching any diet changes.

How does dietary fat affect a dog’s digestion?

Fat requires more digestive enzyme activity than protein or carbohydrates, and it also slows gastric emptying. For dogs with certain fat sensitivities, a diet lower in fat can reduce the workload on the digestive system. Research published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association (2024) notes that low-fat gastrointestinal diets are frequently recommended for dogs requiring dietary fat management. VFS Low Fat Formula provides a guaranteed fat ceiling of 8% to support dogs that need reduced dietary fat.

Is this food good for dogs prone to digestive sensitivity?

Yes. VFS Low Fat Formula was developed by SquarePet’s team of veterinary professionals, including a board-certified veterinary nutritionist, to support digestive health in dogs requiring a reduced-fat diet. The formula includes a proprietary GI Health blend of dietary fiber, chicory root prebiotic, and GanedenBC30® probiotic to further support digestive function.

Does this food contain chicken?

No. VFS Low Fat Formula is chicken-free. The primary protein source is wild-caught Ocean Whitefish - a naturally lean protein. This makes it a suitable option for dogs with chicken sensitivities who also need a low-fat diet.

I am so thrilled to have found VFS Low Fat Formula

I am so thrilled to have found VFS Low Fat Formula. My pet LOVES it and eats every meal with enthusiasm. My dog had a mild but persistent bout with pancreatitis. His CPL enzymes were elevated, but otherwise, he was normal 6 out of 7 days. The dog food he was on was not an extremely high-fat diet, but VFS Square Pet Low Fat food (fingers crossed) has made a difference. In one week on VFS Square Pet Low Fat, his numbers are trending down. This formula is also chicken- and pea-free, which, for those with a chicken intolerance and in breeds where DCM is a concern, makes this food stand out among many prescription diets. The price point is comparable to high-end brands, and the vet bills saved will make it worth the extra $’s. Thank you, Square Pet Nutrition!

So far so good!

My dog was overweight and had gallbladder + pancreas inflammation. He also has an allergy to chicken. It was nearly impossible to find a low fat dog food that did not contain chicken. I am super thankful I found this brand and so far my dog is loving it. I can rest assured his weight is being taken care of while still keeping him allergy free. My order was promptly shipped with no issues. Thank you Square Pet!

Fantastic option for IBD / sensitive stomach dogs!! My dog loves it.

My dog has moderate IBD and had a custom homemade diet before we discovered Square Pet. Previously, an over the counter food option didn't exist for him. He adjusted to VFS low fat easily and without issue (a big deal to dog parents of sensitive stomach dogs) And he LOVES it! I can also use the kibble as training treats. I'm so incredibly relieved and grateful to have found Square Pet. Especially love that they use quality ingredients and single source protein.

Solved my senior dog’s severe dietary issues that took years

Solved my senior dog’s severe dietary issues that took years, three vets, and thousands of dollars to sort out. He had severe pancreatitis despite testing negative for it and possibly allergies to almost all animal protein. Luckily not fish though. Before finding this food I was cooking for him and trying all sorts of differen proteins, grains, vegetables to no avail. He has returned to a healthy weight and had no pancreatitis episodes for the last year and a half.

It's a keeper!

Having Emma diagnosed with diabetes before Christmas, this particular food was recommended because of it's low fat content. Emma was never a big kibble eater but she loves this food as does her brother Jethro! Not to mention it is so good for both of them! They loved it topped with some boiled chicken and green beans and brown rice!

No more pancreatitis, itching, or toots!

Nothing can describe the excitement you feel when you come across a great dog food that helps your baby's condition. One of my Frenchies had chronic pancreatitis. His attacks went from about once a month to ZERO after switching to VFS Low Fat Formula! I was spending so much money on his prescription LF canned food as it was the only thing he could eat during and after his episodes. I have switched his food numerous times in an attempt to find "the one" that would help him, and I am so happy that I finally did!! Not only that, but he is no longer itchy and is just a happier boy all around. Frenchies are know for their "toots," and after starting this food, they are all but gone! Just amazing food all around! Our other Frenchie has also switched to this formula and she is doing great on it as well.

My 15 month old has had pancreatitis 3 times

My 15 month old has had pancreatitis 3 times. It has not been determined the cause and she has been tested for everything. Since having these bouts she has had to be on a low fat diet. She had struggled to eat the expensive brand from my vet. Chewing and scratching is another factor that comes from eating chicken meal or by-product of that dog food. I read about this dog food and ordered it. She absolutely loves it! I’ve had her on it for two weeks. I hope she never gets tired of this dog food.

My husky has a very sensitive stomach

My husky has a very sensitive stomach. We have tried all kinds of different diets, foods and prescription diets. This is the first one he has mostly tolerated.
He is almost thirteen years old and we have been struggling for years. We discovered this formula a couple of years ago and we have been satisfied overall. Last shipment we received from CHEWY the color was off and he would NOT touch it. We decided to get it from the source and so far so good.

Grateful to have Found This

Our dog had a severe case of pancreatitis and I worried I’d never be able to find a low fat food that didn’t contain chicken which causes him loose stool. I found this on Dog Food Advisor and ordered through Chewy as it is not carried in my area. Our boy loves his new food and his stools on this are great! Please distribute in the Midwest! He is back to his old self after close to a month of being sick. Thank you!

Grizzy’s Favorite!

My 4 yr old Boxer was diagnosed with pancreatitis in November 2024. He is also allergic to chicken and has a sensitive stomach. The vet prescribed food all had traces of chicken so I had to find a different option. Square Pet Lowfat was highly recommended. We switched and haven’t looked back! GrizzLee absolutely loves this food and for the first time in years he is so excited for meal time! Zero flare ups since diagnosis. We hope to keep it that way!

This food is everything!

My dog suffers from IBD and pancreatitis. It got so bad at one point, I thought I was going to lose her. Many months of Prednisone and Rx food, she was out of the woods but still had morning bile vomiting and loose stool. I searched and searched for a truly low fat food that was made with actual food ingredients and came across this one so thought I would give it a try. She was on Purina HA Rx food so I did a very slow transition. Three months in and her poops are perfect, she's starting to gain muscle mass again, and morning bile vomiting is rare. I can honestly say that this food is what is keeping my dog healthy and active. Oh, and her breath does not smell bad anymore! I am so happy! Please don't change a thing! This food is everything to my dog!

GREAT for dogs with pancreatitis!

Finally a low fat food rather then the prescription I/D Low fat food, which as far as I am concerned is garbage. Our Newf boy suffered from pancreatitis 1.5 years ago. From then on it was recommended that he go onto the prescription diet. Within a matter of months on that diet he started to look unthrifty, including, decreased appetite, lackluster coat, loss of energy, etc. Eight months ago I came across Square Pet Low Fat food, liked the ingredients and started him on it. I have to say, it made a world of difference! He is a happy, healthy and energetic boy once again! And, he loves the food, so definitely another plus!
