Vet-Formulated Hydrolyzed Protein Dog Food for Dogs with Food Sensitivities - Available Without Prescription

SquarePet® VFS Skin & Digestive Support is a vet-formulated, limited ingredient, hydrolyzed protein dog food designed for dogs with food sensitivities and ingredient intolerances. The sole protein source is hydrolyzed pork - pork that has been broken down into small peptides and free amino acids, similar to the process used in some hypoallergenic infant formulas. Because the proteins are pre-digested into such small fragments, the immune system is less likely to recognize and react to them, making this formula well-suited for dogs that have responded poorly to conventional protein sources.

Unlike other products in the market which require a veterinary prescription - VFS Skin & Digestive Support is available over the counter. No prescription needed. If you have questions or concerns, consult your veterinarian to determine whether a hydrolyzed protein diet is appropriate for your dog.

The Science Behind Hydrolyzed Protein Diets

Hydrolyzed protein diets have a well-established veterinary rationale for dogs with food sensitivities. Key findings that inform the VFS Skin & Digestive Support approach:

  • Hydrolysis breaks dietary protein into fragments small enough that the immune system typically does not recognize them as allergens - the mechanism behind hydrolyzed protein diets in managing adverse food reactions. (Verlinden et al., Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition, 2006)
  • A review in the journal Veterinary Dermatology found that hydrolyzed protein diets are among the most commonly recommended elimination diet options for dogs suspected of adverse food reactions, due to the reduced antigenicity of the protein fragments. (Olivry & Mueller, Veterinary Dermatology, 2017)
  • Omega-3 fatty acids (EPA and DHA) have been shown to support skin barrier function in dogs. Research supports their inclusion in diets for dogs with skin sensitivities and coat conditions. (Bauer, Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association, 2011)

This food is not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any disease. If you have questions or concerns, consult your veterinarian before changing your dog’s diet.

FAQ’s

What is hydrolyzed protein dog food?

Hydrolyzed protein dog food uses protein that has been broken down into very small peptides and free amino acids through a process called hydrolysis. Because the protein fragments are so small, the immune system is less likely to recognize them as foreign and mount a reaction. This makes hydrolyzed protein formulas well-suited for dogs whose veterinarians have recommended a reduced-antigen diet due to food sensitivities or ingredient intolerances. VFS Skin & Digestive Support uses hydrolyzed pork as its sole protein source.

Do I need a prescription for hydrolyzed protein dog food?

Not for VFS Skin & Digestive Support. Unlike competitors which all require a veterinary prescription - VFS Skin & Digestive Support is available over the counter directly from SquarePet and at independent pet retailers across the U.S. If you have questions or concerns consult your veterinarian before switching to a hydrolyzed protein diet to confirm it is appropriate for your dog.

Is this food good for dogs with hot spots?

Hot spots can have multiple causes, including food sensitivities. For dogs whose veterinarian has identified food ingredients as a contributing factor to skin reactions, a limited ingredient hydrolyzed protein diet may be recommended as part of a dietary management plan. VFS Skin & Digestive Support provides essential omega 3 & 6 fatty acids including DHA and EPA, plus guaranteed Zinc (110 mg/kg) and Vitamin E (475 IU/kg) - nutrients that support skin barrier health and coat condition. If you have questions or concerns consult your veterinarian for guidance on managing your dog’s skin health.

Is this food good for dogs with skin and coat issues?

VFS Skin & Digestive Support is formulated to promote healthy skin and a shiny coat. The formula provides essential omega 3 & 6 fatty acids including DHA and EPA from sunflower oil, flaxseed oil, and marine microalgae, plus Zinc (110 mg/kg) and Vitamin E (475 IU/kg) - all confirmed in the Guaranteed Analysis. These nutrients are associated with skin barrier function and coat health in dogs. For dogs with ongoing skin concerns, we recommend working with your veterinarian to identify the underlying cause.

What protein source does this food use?

The sole protein source is hydrolyzed pork. It is a single-source, novel protein formula - meaning it contains no chicken, beef, fish, or other common protein sources that dogs with sensitivities may have been previously exposed to. The ingredient list is limited to reduce the number of potential triggers.

I wan to say this food was amazing unfortunately the complete opposite happened

I wan to say this food was amazing and helped our boy unfortunately the complete opposite happened. With the approval of our vet trying SquarePets Digestive we tried this food for 8 weeks and my dog began to have soft yellow stool (color of food ) we never got a spike stool in factwe had episodes of diarrhea and then he began to vomit. He had to visit ER vet Because his GI became so irritated and he was dehydrated. Vet has advised to transition away from the food at this point and now he is doing a lot better.

My dog is allergic to several animal proteins

My dog is allergic to several animal proteins. I cannot stand the ingredients in her prescription food. I was having trouble keeping weight on my dog with that food. (No wonder - as the first ingredient is corn!) I absolutely love this food. She is still transitioning from her old food - but I suspect I'll be able to get her onto Square Pet 100% soon! SO glad I found you!

Dogs didn't like it

Both Yorkies would not eat it, even when I tried to spice it up with vegetable broth and the canned version. I also tried with one Yorkie that doesn't have food allergies mixing this with his old food... smelled the bowl and walked away

GSP GI issues

I have a GSP that has a lot of GI issues and he’s been on this food for 3 months. For reference when he was on other food he had loose stool, lots of dandruff, and losing lots a hair. After 3 months of being on this food everything is so much better all across the board! No more loose stool, no more dandruff, and not losing nearly as much hair! He loves the taste of it as well and we even have the treats! I love the ingredients as well. I’m so happy my local feed store manager recommended this food. This food has helped my dog so much and would recommend anyone to give it a try specially with GI issues. Make sure to give it at least 2 months!

My GSD absolutely loves her new food.

It is too soon to comment on the allergy issues like scratching, however, Mako, my GSD absolutely loves the taste. I could even use it for treats. I need this transition to be a slow one. We are up to 50/50 with the Canadian HP. No vomiting or diarrhea. Another 3 to 4 weeks and she will be 100% on the Skin and Digestive HP and then we will see how it goes. These things take time to do it right.

High Quality Dog Food Ingredients

This is very good dog food and the ingredients are great. However it did not agree with my dog who has many food intolerances and resulting GI problems. I tried transitioning very slowly over two weeks but something was making him itchy and he would scratch until he was red raw. He started with loose stools again, so I had to stop.

Answer to our prayers!

Our Kirby has suffered with digestive problems since puppyhood. She was diagnosed with IBD at 1 year old, and despite medication and prescription food, she still clearly suffered.
When I found this food last year, the change to her was marked and immediate. She now eats heartily; before, she refused more meals than she ate. She has had one flare in the year I have fed this, and she recovered much faster than ever before. I attribute this improvement to this hydrolyzed pork formula. If you have a dog with recurrent vomiting and diarrhea, give this formula a try. I tell every dog parent and vet I meet about this great food. Thanks to VFS skin/digestive formula, Kirby’s future finally looks bright.

I am sooooo thrilled with the food. My dog has really bad IBS like adults have. We spent over a year having every test done. Change of food, no treats it’s been rough. The vet put him on a medication that is a miracle pill. It’s like nothing was ever wrong. Of course he’s on a special dog food Royal Canin Hydrolyzed protein now for a year. Since he started Petey on this new medication in June we have had no issues. But with each bag I buy the price increases! I went to a new pet store that opened that carries different foods to see if they had anything cheaper and close to this brand. They did not but they gave me your name. They also want to try and carry it. They are trying I think. Well I ordered a bag from you started mixing with the other and he loves it and it works!!!! I am now sold on your product and in fact going to order the larger bag. Your price even though still higher than store is cheaper than my vet. I am so happy to have found you!!!!
